Came across this post when a very vivid memory had me Googling "eating termites after the rain in Africa (I had to generalize and say Africa because I feared that a Google search wouldn't produce results if I specified Kenya). All the familiar words you used - kienyeji, mabuyu, simsim, kumbikumbi, (and chapati!!!) took me back to a time when my parents indulged our shenanigans - or maybe they were too tired to care and just let this little army of kids be - as long as we would come to no harm.

I can't recall how we ever got wind of the fact that the rain termites were edible, having grown up in Nairobi, but after my parents resigned themselves to leaving us be I remember capturing fistfuls of those termites after the rain (very easy to capture, really).

I recall how delicious those termites were when roasted over high heat with just a little bit of salt (that's all the seasoning needed since they produced some type of glorious, indulgent fat). I also recall how somehow, our "Auntie" (oh the wonderful nannies that took care of us back then!), would be ready with a steaming pile of Ugali to accompany our fresh-caught shenanigans.

Thanks for this memory.
