A few of the catering supply firms who were selling to restaurants down here are Now doing home deliveries to try to stay in business. It’s a bit more expensive than the supermarket, but The quality is great. The seafood is to die for and comes fresh from less than 10 miles away. Same with veg and dairy, and no need to buy in anything more than domestic quantities.
Eastern Market in Detroit has been offering weekly market boxes with fresh fruits and veg from local producers, with add-ons like eggs, bread, cheese, etc. I’ve used curbside pickup for boxes a couple of times now. I’ve also avoided large supermarkets and rely mostly on smaller shops, which are now offering curbside pickup for pre-orders. I’m sheltering in place with my elderly mom, so I’m trying to avoid going inside as much as possible. I don’t get all the products or quality I want, but it’s generally been good.
Unfortunately pickup doesn't really seem to be a thing in NYC, I guess they assume if people don't have cars they don't want to pick things up? I've been pretty successful at the grocery stores in my neighborhood, but Wegmans has been the best and I think that's where I'm going to keep going. I did have to get flour from a bakery but I'm glad a lot of places have started doing this!
I use a combination of delivery services while still going to grocery stores every couple of weeks. I get vegetables from a service called Hungry Harvest (produce that doesn't make it to the grocery stores) and have used Mercato. In DC, restaurants are becoming CSAs so some friends have been using them for grocery staples...and t.p.
I'm getting groceries from local store RealGoodStuffCo (@realgoodstuffco) and they deliver a CSA farm box each week! So I can support local rather than ordering from Amazon and still have contactless delivery. The produce is much nicer than I'd get using Instacart or other delivery services.
Hopefully you get your order and the bad reviews are bogus...All the big chains in my part of Canada have delivery and/or pick-up services now. I gratefully have a lot of options.
I'm curious to know about some of those substitutions. I've only had one "face-palm" moment; I ordered a bulb of fennel. They gave me a small jar of fennel seeds. Perhaps they felt I should grow my own?
OK weirder than the substitutions was when I ordered one pound of Brussels sprouts and ended up with one Brussels sprout. That one stumped me for a while. Oh and the lentils instead of (canned) black beans caused me to melt down just a little. The fennel seeds are very funny.
my local go-to supermarket has still been a great option for us, fortunately. it's a rather new place, opened maybe for like 2 years now. not a chain, though learned yesterday that they have 2 other locations now. the inventory has dwindled every now and then for a few things, but they restock regularly and we have no complaints.
Mercato is great! It’s just not a well-oiled machine like Instacart or FreshDirect. Been using them for years never any problems. My moms order did get “lost” on the way to her as if the delivery person kept the groceries.
Friend I love the farmfreshtoyou like crazy. You get on there the second you can customize your box and you can add all kinds of great stuff too. Don’t you worry meat, cheese, all of it....
We bought a CSA share from a micro farm that delivers and is about 5 min from our house. Their season is just about to start and I’m excited
That sounds great!

That sounds like a really good setup.

I almost ordered from a gourmet shop, but then saw that the delivery fee was $40. I wish I had it like that!

Yeah, the pivots give me hope!

I love the restaurant pivot. The LA Health Department tried to shut one down but IMMEDIATELY backed off when the public found out about it.

Yeah, I've been doing pickup, which is great. I'm baffled by their substitutions, but it's okay, I'm so glad to have it.

That's great. My local is consistently out of so much stuff. But I think it'll all even out in a few months.

Oh no! (I can't tell if they use their own delivery people or if they contract with DoorDash.)
They contract, but also some grocery stores have their own devoted delivery people.

OK, I just signed up. This better be good, homeslice. :)
Yes! Get on there a Tuesday at noon to add stuff to your box. The extras have some really great stuff.
I'm gonna have to be careful ... this is only a good deal if I don't go nuts, ha.
7-11 app called 7 NOW. It’s only good for beer and shitty pizza tho.
